We traveled to Mu Cang Chai district – Yen Bai Province. The weather was cool and the rice terraces were magnificient. 

The most important thing when planning a trip to this region is to be at the right time. The rice will be planted on different timing each year. Some years early, some year later. So the best way is to check with the local. If you want to see the peak of the harvest, you must know when they first plant the crop. Fixer in Vietnam – Colorful Cao Bang

Fixer in Vietnam – Colorful Cao Bang during harvest season. 

Cao Bang is one of the most beautiful location to see rice terraces during harvest seaason in Vietnam. It’s located in the northern highlands. During that time, the rice fields turn into golden color, some are still greenist, some yellowist which mix together to create magnificient landscape. 

This was my filming project with my clients in Cao Bang. We was planning to shot the rice fields with the mountain in the background. The first two days was dull and the sky was not clear. So we had to wait until the third day to able to film both from ground level and aerial filming. I was operating a drone to film around this village. 

Later the photo above was choosen and featured on BBC Travel. What is a great honor.

Vietnam Photo Tour – Hmong girl Portrait

This Vietnam Photo Trip that I traveled my customers around Vietnam. We had a chance to shoot many portraits of the local mountain tribe H’mong girls in Sapa and Bac Ha. Here are two of my favorite pics that I want to share with you during my Vietnam Photo Tour. 

1/ The cutest street vendor in Sapa. 

We got there on a rainy day and did not have any thing to do. So we walk around the town and met this little cute girl who sells handmade stuffs and imploring me to buy her some. I agreed and asked her to pose for me. Here is the pic:

Drone Pilot – Do you need Drone permit to fly a drone in Vietnam

As a professional Drone Pilot in Vietnam who has been working with many film companies and directors. I often get this question from friends and other drone pilots from overseas. 

Simple answer is Yes. You will need drone permit in order to fly a drone in Vietnam. If not, your drone may be confiscated. 

But my opinion is that there are some particular area that you can fly your drone without Drone Permits. Such as: Hoi An ancient town, Ninh Binh. 

Why? Because It’s tourist spots and the local authority there want to give you a chance to capture the beauty of the location. 

If you are just flying around at your beach resort and photograph your family, etc. you can skip the drone permit part. 

Of course that is apply for the small size drone. Do not fly in the city whatsoever. Some city such as Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh has strict restriction and your drone can be shot down.

Drone Pilot – Can you bring a drone into Vietnam

I get asked this questions a lot; personally, email, and whatsapp. So I will take my time to write this article hoping to answer it as clear as possible for those who plan to bring their drones into Vietnam during their vacation time here. 

Can you Bring a Drone into Vietnam internationally? Yes, If you arrive at Tan Son Nhat international airport and Noi Bai airport. That would be no problem at all. My customers who join my Vietnam Photo Tours brough his drone into Vietnam multiple times when he traveled with me. 

Can you Bring your drone flying around Vietnam domestically ? Yes, No problem. I do that thousand of times. 

What if you are going to arrive at Da Nang airport? Can you get your drone through Da Nang international airport? 

There is rumor that drones will be seized at Da Nang international Airport but I have not personally experienced that or neither have my customers, so I may not have a clear answer in this case. But I do meet some westerners who flew their drone in Da Nang. I’m not assuming that he could get through.

Vietnam Photo Tours – Mountain tribe and flowers

Vietnam Photo Tours – Mountain tribe and flowers. 

This was a 16 day Vietnam Photo Tour with my customers exploring the northern part of Vietnam during flower blooming season. It’s one of the most beautiful season to capture flowers in this region. 

I picked my customers at Noi Bai internationl airport and then began to explore Ha Noi for a few days. After that, we headed to the northern part and began to explore it. 

One of my favorite location was in Lai Chau. We were able to shoot another Dao Tribe in this region. This Dao people has more unique costumes than the Red Dao that visitors normally see in Sapa. The road to the village is rough but it’s worth the visit. 

Another great place that we visited is in Dong Van district – Ha Giang. In the photo above, my customers was shooting a Dao Dau Mang woman in her traditional costumes. 

The temperature during this time is quite cold. It drops down to 4-6 degree celcius and up to 12 at day time. So if you are planning to explore Dong Van, you should have a warm jacket, waterproof boots would work great. 

best transporation to get around Dong Van should be motor scooter.

My customers and I got up quite early and depart to the tea plantation above. It required us some walking to the hill side so we stood there and waited for the sun to came up.

Fixer in Vietnam – Water Lily Pond in the Mekong Delta – Vietnam. 

As a Local Fixer in Vietnam, this time I and my client traveled to Chau Doc – The Mekong Delta to film and photograph the water lily lady who owns the 1km pond and she harvests the water lilies every morning and sell it to resellers and later the water lilies will be sold at local market. 

We’re lucky that the weather was good and a lot of flowers were blooming during that time. The pond was full of flowers.

This was a ten day Vietnam Photo Tour with my customers who were from Australia. I picked them up in Ho Chi Minh City and then travel along the southern coast up to the central coast. By the time we got to Tuy Hoa, it’s one day prior to the supertypoon Ha Long before it reached the region. The weather was calm one day before that but the sea waves were big and high. It’s literally calm before the storm. After shooting the pic, we move to Quy Nhon and it began to rain heavily since.
